Sony Corporation (commonly referred to as Sony) is a multinational conglomerate corporation headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan, and one of the world’s largest media conglomerates with revenue exceeding ¥ 7.730.0 trillion, or $78.88 billion U.S. (FY2008). Sony is one of the leading manufacturers of electronics, video, communications, video game consoles, and information technology products for the consumer and professional markets. Its founders Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka derived the name from sonus, the Latin word for sound, and also from the English slang word ’sonny’, since they considered themselves to be ’sonny boys’, a loan word into Japanese which in the early 1950’s connoted smart and presentable young men. With the far-sight of expanding worldwide, it was in 1958 that the company formally adopted “Sony Corporation” as its corporate name.

Sony Corporation is the electronics business unit and the parent company of the Sony Group, which is engaged in business through its five operating segments – electronics, games, entertainment (motion pictures and music), financial services and other. These make Sony one of the most comprehensive entertainment companies in the world. Sony’s principal business operations include Sony Corporation (Sony Electronics in the U.S.), Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment, Sony Ericsson, and Sony Financial. As a semiconductor maker, Sony is among the Worldwide Top 20 Semiconductor Sales Leaders. The company’s current slogan is make.believe.

Sony’s Story:

It was in 1946 that Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita together with a small team of passionate and committed group of employees started to build “Tokyo Tsushin Kenkyujo” (Totsuko), or “Tokyo Telecommunications Research Institute” into the billion dollar global conglomerate that it is today. The main objective of the company was to design and create innovative products which would benefit the people.

From early attempts at creating products like the rice-cooker to the later success of creating Japan’s first magnetic recorder, the innovative company went on to create other hit products which won the company widespread recognition and international acclaim as a truly global company known for its quality and innovative products. Significant product milestones included Japan’s first transistor radio (1955), Trinitron colour television (1968), Walkman personal stereo (1979), Handycam videocamera (1989), PlayStation (1994), Blu-ray Disc recorder (2003) and PlayStation 3 (2006).

It was promoted by Subhash Chandra, one of India’s leading entrepreneurs, who sought to establish Zee as an ‘infotainment’ company focused on the convergence of media and communications.

Early in Zee’s history, Subhash Chandra and the STAR group of companies entered into a joint venture for television broadcasting in India. When News Corp Limited acquired the satellite distribution business of Star, News Corp de facto became a partner of Zee. To further develop the relationship, News Corp and Zee subsequently co-founded Siticable one of the leading cable MSOs. In March 2000, after a six-year joint venture, Zee bought News Corp’s stake in both the broadcasting business and Siticable.

Zee has an integrated range of businesses, encompassing the content-to-consumer value chain of media and entertainment business. Zee is a pioneer in India, in every aspect of content aggregation and distribution through satellite, cable and Internet.

Zee is the largest producer and aggregator of Hindi programming in the world, with more than 30,000 hours of original programming in the library one of the most popular entertainment brands in India. Zee was the first to launch a Hindi cinema channel in India – Zee Cinema. The company became the pioneer by launching a 24 hour Hindi News Channel in India – Zee News, now operating as a separate company called Zee News Limited (ZNL). The company was the first to set up MSO operations at a national level – Siticable. It has now transferred its business to a separate company called Wire and Wireless (India) Limited (WWIL).

Alliances / Partnerships

Satellite Television for the Asian Region (STAR) is an Asian TV service owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. It is based in Hong Kong, with programming offices in India and Australia, as well as in other south Asian countries. Launched in 1991 with five television channels, STAR pioneered satellite television in Asia and in the process catalysed explosive growth in the media industry across the entire region. According to the STAR website, their service has more than 300 million viewers in 54 countries and is watched by approximately 100 million viewers every day. STAR’s revenues have increased from $220 million in 2003 to $245 million in 2004. STAR has emerged as India’s second-largest media company after Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. which is the publisher of Times of India.

The company was launched in 1990 as part of Hutchison Whampoa group. It started broadcasting five television channels in 1991 from AsiaSat 1 Satellite. Launch of StarTV pioneered satellite television in Asia and in the process catalysed explosive growth in the media industry across the entire region. In 1993 Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation purchased 63.6% of STAR for over $500 million, followed by the purchase of the remaining 34.6% in July 1995.

Today STAR broadcasts over 60 services in nine languages. Shows include entertainment, sports, movies, music, news and documentaries. STAR controls over 20,000 hours of Indian and Chinese programming. STAR owns an extensive library of multi-language content that has successfully captured the hearts of millions across Asia and beyond. STAR’s library includes Fortune Star, the world’s largest contemporary Chinese language feature film library. The Fortune Star library includes over 600 major motion picture titles that showcase superstars such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat, Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh and come from a list of renowned filmmakers that includes John Woo, Yuen Woo Ping and Ronny Yu. STAR also syndicates and distributes its 20,000 hour library of top-rated Indian and Chinese television programming. Among the titles in this library are India’s most watched daily dramas as well as No. 1 Taiwanese music variety programs Lollipop and Blackie’s Teenage Club. In partnership with leading companies in Asia, STAR businesses extend to filmed entertainment, television production, cable systems and wireless and digital services.
In 1994 STAR removed BBC World Service Television (now BBC World) from the network following demands from the government of the People’s Republic of China. It is alleged that the PRC government was unhappy with BBC coverage and threatened to block Star TV in the huge mainland Chinese market if the BBC was not withdrawn. This is despite technology that is capable of blocking BBC World in China, while making it available in other countries they serve.

Star Ventures:
Over the years, STAR has established strategic alliances with a formidable array of companies, working closely together to explore business opportunities in the unique business environments of countries across Asia.
