The birth of Mahindra & Mahindra began when K.C. Mahindra visited the United States of America as Chairman of the India Supply Mission. He met Barney Roos, inventor of the rugged ‘general purpose vehicle’ or Jeep and had a flash of inspiration: A vehicle that had proved its invincibility on the battlefields of World War II,  be ideal for India’s rugged terrain and its kutcha rural roads.

Swift action followed this thought. The Mahindra brothers joined hands with a distinguished gentleman called Ghulam Mohammed & on October 2nd, 1945, Mahindra & Mohammed was set up as a franchise for assembling Jeeps from Willys, USA.

Two years later, India became an independent nation and Mahindra & Mohammed changed its name to Mahindra & Mahindra. Ghulam Mohammed migrated to Pakistan post-partition and became the first Finance Minister of Pakistan.

Initially set up to manufacture general-purpose utility vehicles, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) was first known for assembly under licence of the iconic Willys Jeep in India. The company later branched out into manufacture of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and agricultural tractors, rapidly growing from being a manufacturer of army vehicles and tractors to an automobile major with a growing global market. At present, M&M is the leader in the utility vehicle (UV) segment in India with its flagship UV, the Scorpio (known as the Mahindra Goa in Italy).

M&M is India’s largest SUV maker.

• At the 2008 Delhi Auto Show, Mahindra executives said the company is pursuing an aggressive product expansion program that would see the launch of several new platforms and vehicles over the next three years, including an entry-level SUV designed to seat five passengers and powered by a small turbodiesel engine. True to their word, Mahindra & Mahindra launched the Mahindra Xylo in January 2009.
• Also in early 2008, Mahindra commenced its first overseas CKD operations with the launch of the Mahindra Scorpio in Egypt, in partnership with the Bavarian Auto Group. This was soon followed by assembly facilities in Brazil. Vehicles assembled at the plant in Bramont, Manaus, include Scorpio Pik Ups in single and double cab pick-up body styles as well as SUVs.

Skoda Auto is a part of the international Volkswagen Group, one of the premium automobile manufacturers in Europe. Skoda entered the Indian market in November 16, 2001. The company invested in a plant at Shendra, outskirts of Aurangabad, the only manufacturing facility of the company outside Europe. The brand Skoda Auto is known for its stylish looks, well built exterior and its constant endeavor to introduce modern technologies.

Till date Skoda Auto has introduced twelve luxury models in the Indian market including Skoda Superb and Skoda Laura. In 2005, the company achieved more than 25% market in the luxury segment. Yamaha made its initial foray into India in 1985. Subsequently, it entered into a 50:50 joint venture with the Escorts Group in 1996. In 1948, Hindustan Motors shifted its assembly plant from Port Okha in Gujarat to Uttarpara in the Hooghly district of West Bengal and strengthened its manufacturing capacity in the automobile segment.
Engaged in the manufacture of the Ambassador, Contessa and utility vehicles like the Trekker, Porter and Pushpak, the plant also has to its credit, many innovations and improvements in the automobile industry in India. The Pithampur plant in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, houses the Road Trusted Vehicle division, manufacturing the “RTV” brand of multi utility vehicles, in technical collaboration with OKA Motor Company, Australia.

HSCI’s state-of-the-art manufacturing unit was set up in 1997 at Greater Noida, U.P with an investment of Rs. 450 crore. The green-field project is spread across 150 acres of land (over 6,00,000 sq. m.). The initial installed capacity of the plant was 30,000 cars per annum, which was thereafter increased to 50,000 cars on a two-shift basis. The capacity has further been enhanced to 1,00,000 units annually in February 2008 . The capacity expansion was necessitated by the excellent performance of all the Honda models, particularly the growing demand for City in India. Several modifications were done by the company with the objective of offering higher quality products to its customers, faster and quicker. The expansion process also included expansion of the covered area in the plant, from 1,07,000 sq. m. to 1,31,794 sq. m.

The HMSI factory is spread over 52 acres, with a covered area of about 85,815 square metres at Manesar, Gurgaon district of Haryana. The foundation stone for the factory was laid on 14th December 1999 and the factory was completed in January 2001. The initial installed capacity was 100,000 scooters per year, which has reached 6,00,000 scooters by the year by 2007 and motorcycle capacity shall be 4,00,000 per annum. The total investment outlay for the initial capacity was Rs. 215 crores. By the end of the year 2008, the accumulated investment was estimated Rs.900 crores.

Until recently, 18.28% of the company was owned by the Indian government, and 54.2% by Suzuki of Japan. The Indian government held an initial public offering of 25% of the company in June 2003. As of May 10, 2007, Govt. of India sold its complete share to Indian financial institutions. With this, Govt. of India no longer has stake in Maruti Udyog.

Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) was established in February 1981, though the actual production commenced in 1983 with the Maruti 800, based on the Suzuki Alto keicar which at the time was the only modern car available in India, it’s only competitors- the Hindustan Ambassador and Premier Padmini were both around 25 years out of date at that point. Through 2004, Maruti has produced over 5 Million vehicles. Marutis are sold in India and various several other countries, depending upon export orders. Cars similar to Marutis (but not manufactured by Maruti Udyog) are sold by Suzuki in Pakistan and other South Asian countries.

The company annually exports more than 30,000 cars and has an extremely large domestic market in India selling over 500,000 cars annually. Maruti 800, till 2004, was the India’s largest selling compact car ever since it was launched in 1983. More than a million units of this car have been sold worldwide so far. Currently, Maruti Alto tops the sales charts.
Due to the large number of Maruti 800s sold in the Indian market, the term “Maruti” is commonly used to refer to this compact car model. Till recently the term “Maruti”, in popular Indian culture, was associated to the Maruti 800 model.

It’s manufacturing facilities are located at two facilities Gurgaon and Manesar south of New Delhi. Maruti’s Gurgaon facility has an installed capacity of 350,000 units per annum. The Manesar facilities, launched in February 2007 comprise a vehicle assembly plant with a capacity of 100,000 units per year and a Diesel Engine plant with an annual capacity of 100,000 engines and transmissions. Manesar and Gurgaon facilities have a combined capability to produce over 700,000 units annually.
