Sony is one of the leading manufacturers of electronics, video, communications, video game consoles, and information technology products for the consumer and professional markets. Its founders Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka derived the name from sonus, the Latin word for sound, and also from the English slang word ’sonny’, since they considered themselves to be ’sonny boys’, a loan word into Japanese which in the early 1950’s connoted smart and presentable young men. With the far-sight of expanding worldwide, it was in 1958 that the company formally adopted “Sony Corporation” as its corporate name.

Sony Corporation is the electronics business unit and the parent company of the Sony Group, which is engaged in business through its five operating segments – electronics, games, entertainment (motion pictures and music), financial services and other. The company was established in the year 1963 as a single product company manufacturing high precision hermetically sealed panel meters for defense applications in Palakkad, Kerala, under the name of British Physical Laboratories.

Within a span of 5 years BPL has exemplified the quest for excellence in the world of medical products becoming the country’s foremost in manufacturing electro-cardiographs. With the increasing nationwide infrastructure development in power & telecommunication, BPL ventured into this field with its Power Line Communications Carrier (PLCC) and continues to be a leader in this field. With the advent of televisions in India, BPL used its manufacturing strengths and strong technical tie up with SANYO Japan to launch the BPL brand televisions in Indian market. With relentless commitment to quality, consistent dedication to customer satisfaction and unparalleled standards of service, BPL is recognized as a benchmark for new age technology, superior quality, digital concepts and personalized service that has ensured loyal customers and nationwide acclaim in the industry.

BPL established its image as a reliable and strong brand in the consumer durables market, a reputation that it still enjoys. In India, BPL has its footprint across the country through a distribution network comprising of over 7000 channel partners. Manned by customer friendly and informed sales persons.

Over the years, BPL’s growth has been subject to constant challenges. The company was started at a time when the government had reserved many areas of business for the public sector. It had also virtually barred most entrepreneurs from entering other fields through reservations on licensing.

From 1980 onwards, when the industrial licensing was relaxed, BPL began manufacturing televisions and telecommunications equipment, demonstrating its potential and future business area. In the early 1990s, after globalisation and liberalization of the Indian economy, competition entered the market. BPL retained its strong presence and growth rate. Strategic alliances with international companies provided the technology for them and set the standards of quality.

Using its experience of the market and the consumer, BPL concentrated on importing technology, improving product quality, innovations and manufacture of electronic products that enhanced the quality of life. After 37 years, BPL has metamorphosed from an entrepreneurial venture, into India’s biggest consumer electronics company.

Started in 1897 as a locks manufacturing company, the Godrej Group is today one of the most accomplished and diversified business houses in India. Godrej’s success has been driven by the company’s commitment to delivering innovation and excellence. Through the consistent application of this commitment and a century of ethical business conduct, Godrej has earned an unparalleled reputation for trust and reliability.

In 1930, Godrej became the first company in the world to develop the technology to manufacture soap with vegetable oils; that spirit of innovation has continued throughout the organization’s history. Today Godrej is delivering consumers exciting innovations across a spectrum of businesses. The company’s pursuit of excellence is equally well established and enduring. In the 1944 Mumbai docks blast, Godrej safes were the only security equipment whose contents were unharmed; an equal level of product quality continues to be expected from every product bearing the Godrej brand name. Godrej management understands that the company’s greatest asset is the trust and faith that consumers have reposed in it, and recognizes that the company must continue to earn this trust. This translates to the organization delivering outstanding quality and value in everything it does.

Godrej’s ethical and visionary practices have allowed the company to successfully expand into a number of businesses. Today Godrej is a leading manufacturer of goods and provider of services in a multitude of categories: home appliances, consumer durables, consumer products, industrial products, and agri products to name a few. A recent estimate suggested that 350 million people across India use Godrej products. The group has more recently entered the real estate and information technology sectors, and management views these as avenues for enormous growth.
The Godrej Group stands in a strong position today. With annual sales in excess of $1 billion, a workforce of approximately 18,000, and a strong diversified portfolio, Godrej has proven its ability to deliver strong financial performance.

The Godrej Group is firmly entrenched in diverse businesses. Security Systems and Safes, Typewriters and Word processors, Rocket Launchers, Refrigerators and Furniture, Outsourcing Services, Machine Tools and Process Equipment, Cosmetics and Detergents, Engineering Workstations, Medical Diagnostics and Aerospace Equipment, Edible Oils and Chemical, Mosquito Repellents, Car perfumes, Chicken and Agri-products.
The Godrej group owns vast tracts of land in and around Vikhroli, a suburb to the Northeast of Mumbai, India’s commercial capital. Traditionally, this location has been their manufacturing base, but increasingly they have moved significant production facilities inland in search of cheaper pastures.

Some of Godrej’s firsts:

Blue Star is India’s largest central air-conditioning company with an annual turnover of Rs 2270 crores, a network of 24 offices, 5 modern manufacturing facilities, 650 dealers and around 2500 employees. (figures as of 2008).
It fulfils the air-conditioning needs of a large number of corporate and commercial customers and has also established leadership in the field of commercial refrigeration equipment ranging from water coolers to cold storages. Blue Star’s other businesses include marketing and maintenance of hi-tech professional electronic and industrial products.
Blue Star has business alliances with world renowned technology leaders such as Rheem Mfg Co, USA; Hitachi, Japan; Eaton – Williams, UK; Thales e-Security Ltd., UK; Jeol, Japan; ISA, Italy and many others, to offer superior products and solutions to customers.

Blue Star was founded in 1943, by Mohan T Advani, an entrepreneur of exemplary vision and drive. The Company began as a modest 3-member team engaged in reconditioning of air-conditioners and refrigerators. Within three years, the Company secured the agency for US-based Melchoir Armstrong Dessau’s air-conditioning equipment. Shortly after, the Company was selected by Worthington, the US leader in air-conditioning, as its India based partner – these were the first of numerous foreign associations to follow.

An expanding Blue Star then ventured into the manufacture of ice candy machines and bottle coolers and also began the design and execution of central airconditioning projects. Then came the manufacture of water coolers. In 1949, the proprietorship company set its sights on bigger expansion, took on shareholders and became Blue Star Engineering Company Private Limited.
Ever since, there has been a constant and profitable growth. Blue Star diversified and took up agencies for Material Testing Machines and Business Machines. The export arena beckoned and the Company began exporting water coolers to Dubai, where in fact, ‘Blue Star’ soon became the generic name for water coolers.

The sixties and the early seventies witnessed Blue Star continuing to expand and thrive. Employee strength crossed the 1000 mark and the company went public in 1969 to become Blue Star Limited, as it continues to be called today.

In 1970, the Company took up the all-India distributorship of Hewlett-Packard products. As the Company’s reputation for delivering the goods in the most challenging of air-conditioning projects grew steadily, the early seventies saw a series of prestigious projects being entrusted to Blue Star – skyscrapers such as Air India Building, Express Towers, the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai, apart from several others. Revenues touched the Rs. 10-crore mark and staff strength doubled to exceed 2000.
The Company began building determinedly upon its existing overseas presence, Blue Star set up a joint venture with Al Shirawi in Dubai and went on to execute some outstanding projects in Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. To complement its air-conditioning projects and undertake turnkey industrial projects, an Industrial Division was set up in 1978.

In 1983 Blue Star set up a software export unit at Seepz, Mumbai. Then came associations with more global leaders – a collaboration with York International of USA for central air-conditioning equipment and joint ventures with Motorola and Yokogawa.
An advanced manufacturing facility was set up at Dadra in 1997, in technical collaboration with Rheem, USA, to enhance manufacturing competency. Today it bears the distinction of being regarded as the best such plant India-wide. The dealer network was strengthened and expanded to bring products within easy reach of every customer.

In the year 2000 the software unit was spun off into a separate company, Blue Star Infotech Ltd., while the export of air-conditioning products from the Dadra factory began and contract manufacturing for local and foreign brands commenced. Blue Star crossed the Rs.500 crore milestone in 2000 and the Rs.600 crore milestone in 2002-03. With the boom in construction activity and increased infrastructure investments, the Company leveraged its leadership position to grow aggressively. In the following three years, the Company nearly doubled its turnover, clocking Rs 1178 crores in 2005-06.

The Company has manufacturing facilities at Thane, Dadra, Bharuch, Himachal and Wada which use state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to ensure that the products have consistent quality and reliability.

Blue Star primarily focuses on the corporate and commercial markets. The parent company (Whirlpool Corporation) is headquartered at Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA with a global presence in over 170 countries and manufacturing operation in 13 countries with 11 major brand names such as Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Roper, Estate, Bauknecht, Laden and Ignis. The company boasts of resources and capabilities beyond achievable feat of any other in the industry. Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE: WHR) is a Fortune 500 company and a global manufacturer and marketer of major home appliances, with annual sales of approximately $18 billion, more than 73,000 employees, and more than 70 manufacturing and technology research centers around the world. After acquiring the Maytag Corporation on March 31, 2006, Whirlpool Corporation became the largest home appliance maker in the world.

Whirlpool initiated its international expansion in 1958 by entering Brazil. However, it emerged as truly global leader in the 1980’s. This encouraging trend brought the company to India in the late 1980s. It forayed into the market under a joint venture with TVS group and established the first Whirlpool manufacturing facility in Pondicherry.

Soon Whirlpool acquired Kelvinator India Limited in 1995 and marked an entry into Indian refrigerator market as well. The same year also saw acquisition of major share in TVS joint venture and later in 1996, Kelvinator and TVS acquisitions were merged to create Indian home appliance leader of the future, Whirlpool India. This expanded the company’s portfolio in the Indian subcontinent to washing machines, refrigerator, microwave ovens and air conditioners.

Today, Whirlpool is the most recognized brand in home appliances in India and holds a market share of over 25%. The company owns three state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities at Faridabad, Pondicherry and Pune. Each of these manufacturing set-ups features an infrastructure that is witness of Whirlpool’s commitment to consumer interests and advanced technology.

In the year ending in March ‘06, the annual turnover of the company for its Indian enterprise was Rs.1,375 Crores. According to IMRB surveys Whirlpool enjoys the status of the single largest refrigerator and second largest washing machine brand in India.

The company’s brand and image speaks of its commitment to the homemaker from every aspect of its functioning. It has derived its functioning principles out of an undaunted partnership with the homemakers and thus a slogan of “You and whirlpool, the world’s best homemaker” dots its promotional campaigns.

Whirlpool has the distinction of having ISO certification for all its facilities in India. The refrigerator facility is located at Faridabad and manufactures a complete range of direct cool refrigerators. With the infusion of technology, machinery and streamlining the processes the capacity of this plant was increased from 700,000 to 1,000,000 annually.

Whirlpool’s commitment to the Indian operation has resulted in the setting up of a state-of-the-art facility for the manufacture of no frost refrigerators at Ranjangaon near Pune. This facility has set the standards as one of the world’s front runners in environmentally sensitive eco-friendly manufacturing units.

The washer facility is located at Pondicherry and manufactures both fully automatic and semi automatic washers. Constant feedback is taken from the consumers resulting in products being continuously upgrade in features and in styling.

Products manufactured in the above facilities match Whirlpool’s global standards and are exported to over 70 countries across the globe. Whirlpool of India is today India’s largest exporter of home appliance and has been approved as an Export House.

Design Engineering is being developed as a core competency for Whirlpool of India. A step in the direction has resulted in the setting up of Regional Technology Centres at Pune focussing on refrigerators and at Pondicherry for washers. This will provide WOI with a competitive edge in speedy customisation of products suited to consumer needs.

In the second phase of developing this core competency Whirlpool set up a Global Technology Centre at Pune in 2002 to provide design support for the global organisation. A design and development centre for Whirlpool’s global small appliances brand Kitchenaid has also been set up at Pondicherry. The already strong manufacturing and technology infrastructure was augmented by the establishment of a Global Consumer Design centre for Asia in New Delhi in 2005

Whirlpool India’s products range from Refrigerators, Washing Machines, 100% Dryers, Air conditioners, Oil Filled Heaters, Microwave Ovens, Purafresh RO Range, to Home UPS Systems.
